A hit-and-run accident is any time another driver leaves the scene of an accident without providing their name and insurance information. If you can identify their vehicle by the license plate, you can file a claim with their driver's insurance company. If you cannot identify their vehicle by the license plate, you can file a claim with your own insurance company if you have the proper insurance (see discussion below). Whether you were in the car at the time or the car was parked at the time of the crash, the following information will help process these claims:
1. If someone crashes into your vehicle and flees the scene without providing your name and insurance information, please call 911. Please give the 911 operator any details you remember about how the crash happened, including the other vehicle and the other driver. If your opponent's license plate or part of the license plate, be sure to provide it. A license plate, even an incomplete license plate, is a key piece of evidence to be able to identify a car accident and its vehicle.
2. Locate witnesses as soon as possible and obtain their names and phone numbers. Also, look for nearby security cameras that may have captured the incident.
